JJ Murphy: An Inside
Look at City Management
As the city manager of Hobbs, New Mexico, I take my job very seriously. I am responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the city and for shaping and delivering a shared vision of the city by our leaders. By working with our department heads, I make recommendations and decisions to try to provide the necessary resources for our nearly 425 city employees to carry out their duties. It is my belief that the principal mission of any government is to serve the best interests of the people.
From the police, fire, and ambulance crews, to collecting garbage and cleaning the parks, our employees work hard every day to serve the 44,000 people of Hobbs who share a city that is comprised of a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. I, JJ Murphy, city manager of Hobbs, am proud to work with these fine employees in order to help lead this great team, and to constantly work to improve the ways that we carry out our mission of serving the people. It is my responsibility to avoid potential problems, maintain and develop workable solutions and create a spirit of cooperation.
The City of Hobbs is one of the few municipal governments in the country that is in the middle of a gas, oil, solar and nuclear energy boom all facing incredible growth. One of the ongoing strategic challenges is managing the city’s capability to satisfy citizens and city commission where short-term initiatives do not always blend with the long-term strategy.
As JJ Murphy, city manager of Hobbs, I aim to deliver the best strategies for this beautiful city. As an officer in the United States Air Force Reserves and a municipal manager, my life has been dedicated to public service. I believe that my dedication to public service will show in the growth of Hobbs, New Mexico.
